In the field of horticulture, the choice of lighting can significantly impact the growth and development of plants. LED grow lights have become a popular choice due to their energy efficiency and spectral tunability. However, another key factor that is often overlooked but is crucial is the IP (Ingress Protection) rating of these lighting fixture.

IP rating is a standard measure used to define the level of protection provided by electrical equipment against solids and liquids. For LED grow lights, the IP rating indicates their resistance to dust, water, and other environmental factors. The rating is composed of two digits - the first digit represents protection against solids, while the second digit represents protection against liquids.

IP followed by the first digit of the dust protection class

Numbers
Protection Range Clarification
0 unprotected No special protection against external persons or objects
1 Prevents intrusion of solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 50mm Prevents the human body (e.g., the palm of the hand) from accidentally coming into contact with the internal parts of the appliance, and prevents the intrusion of large-sized (diameter greater than 50mm) foreign objects.
2 Prevents intrusion of solid foreign objects larger than 12.5 mm in diameter Prevents human fingers from touching the internal parts of the appliance and prevents the intrusion of medium-sized (diameter greater than 12.5mm) foreign objects.
3 Prevents intrusion of solid foreign objects larger than 2.5mm in diameter Prevents tools, wires and similar small external objects with a diameter or thickness greater than 2.5mm from penetrating and coming into contact with the internal parts of the appliance.
4 Prevents intrusion of solid foreign objects larger than 1.0mm in diameter Prevents tools, wires, and similar small external objects with a diameter or thickness greater than 1.0mm from penetrating and coming into contact with the internal parts of the appliance.
5 Protection from foreign objects and dust Completely prevent the intrusion of foreign objects, although not completely prevent the intrusion of dust, but the amount of dust intrusion will not affect the normal operation of electrical appliances.
6 Protection from foreign objects and dust Completely protected from foreign objects and dust

The second digit after IP: waterproof rating

Numbers Protection Range Clarification
0 unprotected No special protection against water or moisture
1 Prevents water droplets from soaking in No special protection against water or moisture
2 Tilts at 15 degrees and still prevents water droplets from soaking in When the appliance is tilted from vertical to 15 degrees, dripping water will not damage the appliance
3 Prevents sprayed water from soaking in Protect the appliance from rain or water sprayed at an angle of less than 60 degrees from the vertical.
4 Prevents splash water from soaking in Prevents damage to electrical appliances caused by splashing water from all directions.
5 Prevents sprayed water from soaking in Protect against low-pressure water jets that last at least 3 minutes
6 Prevents immersion in large waves Protect against heavy spraying of water for at least 3 minutes
7 Prevents water immersion during immersion Protection against the effects of 30 minutes of immersion in water up to 1 meter deep
8 Preventing water immersion during sinking Protected against the effects of continuous immersion in water at depths greater than 1 meter. Exact conditions are specified by the manufacturer for each device. Protection against hazards

For indoor gardening setups, especially in moist environments or places prone to water splashes, it is imperative to choose LED grow lights with a higher IP rating. A higher IP rating ensures that the lighting fixtures are sealed and protected, thereby minimizing the risk of water damage and corrosion. This not only extends the lifespan of the lights but also reduces the chances of electrical hazards, ensuring a safe growing environment for the plants.

Moreover, the IP rating of LED grow lights also affects maintenance requirements. Fixtures with higher IP ratings are easier to clean and maintain because their design is waterproof without compromising functionality. This makes them highly suitable for use in greenhouse environments or areas that require regular cleaning.

Case Study: Why an HPS Grower Switched to Shark‑2600 – Not for Savings, but for Even Light from Top to Bottom Case Study: Why an HPS Grower Switched to Shark‑2600 – Not for Savings, but for Even Light from Top to Bottom

A Pacific Northwest facility ran 1000W HPS for five years. Solid yields, but shadows left lower branches behind, and HPS lacked blue/far‑red. Other LEDs dropped THC or created hot spots.
Then Shark‑2600. Not for the 24% power savings – for the linear bar design and full‑cycle FIF spectrum. Fixed the shadows. Improved lower canopy density.
Result: Same yield, same THC. 8–10% denser lower buds.

Wasting money on the wrong greenhouse grow light? Higher wattage doesn’t always mean better harvests.
400W is perfect for small greenhouses, hobby grows and specialty crops—lower electric bills, balanced light with zero leaf burn.
1000W fits commercial large greenhouses and dense canopies, bringing stronger light penetration, faster blooming and bigger profits that easily cover power costs.
